Why everyone is busy googling who Kailash Satyarthi is and furious over India being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize 2014?
Peace prize for two nations in unison who are at war with each other at borders is no less than a brutal irony on face of both... |
Just when I was posting tweets and updates on my social
networking portals, a friend who had switched on his TV after getting the news
of India-Pakistan sharing together the Nobel peace called me to ask who this
Kailash Satyarthi is! Add to it, he was furious. Furious because in his views,
'International Community' was trying to 'shame' India by over-exposing its
problems; they were trying to shift the focus from strong and powerful
government, development, PM's successful American visit to this old embarrassing problems! I
was surprised for sure but more so because he didn’t for single second asked me
about who Malala is!
Okay. Let's face it. We, including me, know very less or
nothing about the Satyarthi's who work in dark without the wish and hopes of
spotlights. We know about Malala Yousufzay, after all the news of Taliban
shooting and international communities’ efforts to idolise her. She had already
been part of many UN functions and has been awarded many international awards.
On the other hand Kailash Satyarthi is sober commoner who lives in Delhi with
his family, friends and other children that he has rescued from different hues
of labour. May be his achievements are not fancy enough for us to take note.
May be his work don't earn TRP for that random news channel which airs
everything except news 24 by 7!
Remember the time when we turned furious and spammed Maria Sharapova's
profile all because she didn't knew who Sachin Tendulkar is! What now?
People have been quick to congratulate the two but how good do we know them? If
only Google releases top searches today, Kailash Satyarthi will top the list;
may be, 'who Kailash Satyarthi' will make it to the summit!
Like Malala, Satyarthi too has risked his life in his quest
to save childhood of 80000+ children. It wasn't any cakewalk for him.
Many of you might have landed on Wikipedia searching for who
this new Nobel laureate from subcontinent is but, not all might have noticed
that more than national awards and recognition, it's international community
that has awarded and recognised Satyarthi's struggle. May be down the road, we
can expect one Padma award for him but why now? Dear Indian Government, where
were you all this days? And please, don't start all over again by abusing
previous congress government. Mr. Kailash Satyarthi may be living today in
Delhi but he originally belongs to BJP ruled Madhya Pradesh. So it's not they
versus us but all of us who have failed in recognising the effort that was going
places to rescue nation’s future.
Conspiracy to shame India! Who and what are we trying to
hide? Yes, we are no more the nation of serpents and cowherds but not any
better. PM Narendra Modi might have announced it in Madison Garden that, now we
play with mouse not snakes, but how many? Still a considerable population of
ours is indulged in practises which are inhuman and barred by international
community. There are laws but we hardly practise them. Recently Narendra Modi
launched Swachcha Bharat (Clean India) initiative, which must be lauded but how
many of us know that scavenging is prohibited in India yet we see poor people cleaning
our toilets and drains by hands. Kailash Satyarthi runs Bachpan Bachao Andolan which in recent times had caught
international eyes for his efforts and achievements but has failed to catch his own countrymen's attention.
Our newspapers, media houses and we in unison are busy to
find what new offers Flipkart, Amazon or Snapdeal are offering but only once in
new moon do our newspapers carry stories of Kailash Satyarthi's; rest of the
days they are busy in digging which neta
said what or which celebrity eyed who! When was the last time you read news of
hunger and poverty or child labour and trafficking on front page of a
newspaper? They rarely make 'news' for our papers. Are papers alone to blame?
Nope. It's we, readers too who are at fault. They feed us what we desire. May
be we should start showing them we are interested in Kailash Bharthi's more
than the netas, offers and celebrities.
Not because one has won a Nobel but because they matter more than the rest.
As we bask in joy and start congratulating him, one must ask
oneself a very basic question; if Satyarthi really had to risk his life in his
struggle to bring smiles on the faces of children who were caught in the
vicious circle of child trafficking or labour, if only we all were more aware,
more humane to the cause of children's education, their childhood or just that
India had enforced equally what is written in that old book of constitution
that makes us proud every now and then to declare we were born in largest
democracy!
On a serious note, at least now that an esteemed
international body has highlighted how important our little one's formative
days and their education is, through awarding two of sub-continents crusaders, let’s
hope, pray and pledge not to ignore the chotus
and munnis who are everywhere from
polishing our shoes to washing our utensils at roadside hotels or bringing tea.
They are everywhere where they are not supposed to be; let's encourage, help in
case possible to bring them where they really belong – schools.
With a hope that we read the stories of Kailash Satyarthi's
more and more, help the people who are helping our
future generation and encourage their tribe, I sign off.
Lest I forget, thanks for reading!
