Take Your Headscarf Off, Show Us Your Hair and Get Your Education – Hindus to Hijab-Wearing Muslim Girls

Image
Image courtesy: The Hindu       From what I know and can remember Muslim girls in school (not all but some of them) have been wearing hijab (or headscarf) for ages now. It was just another piece of clothing that never bothered us, to the point that we never even noticed its existence. I even know of girls and even teachers who would arrive at school in niqab (or burqa, black outer clothing like a rain-or-sun-coat) and then they would remove it before entering a classroom. Again, this wasn’t a point of conversation or of difference. The only time I have been thinking of these clothing choices and the faces of friends that wore them is now. Now when many schools in Karnataka (and even in Madhya Pradesh, another BJP ruled state) have banned young girls (and even teachers) from covering their hair with a cloth also referred to as wearing hijab . It all started with Hindu kids sloganeering and hooting – all of a sudden – as Muslim kids passed before them. O...

Fuck You And Fuck Your System

Image
Fuck you and fuck your system Fuck Justice and Law Fuck your courts and Fuck your Human Rights Fuck the whole system I want blood of those who rape They deserve no life Kill them, shoot them cold But why just four men? More than twenty women get raped everyday Fucking shoot them all Shoot the Sengars Ram Rahims, Asarams and Chinmayanands Shoot that Nityananda dolt Will you though? Will you shoot them? Go to Puttaparthi and wake up the Satya Sai from his grave Shoot in him as many bullets as the boys he defiled Then, and only then, will I be proud Until then, shut up Shut the fuck up and let the courts do their thing! Written in response to the mob frenzy and support to Telangana Police gunning down four rape accused without realizing the implications and meaning of what extra-judicial encounters as this mean.  Inspired from Raghu Karnad’s post .

Another Women’s Day Another Round Of Wishes — But They Mean Nothing Until…

Image
I’m tired. Tired of the wishes I read on Twitter, Facebook and elsewhere. Tired of how numb we have become to women’s issues and reduced it to a day where you send all the females you know paltry wishes, that heart-touching quote or that generic women-carry-men-for-nine-months crap and next day as night makes way for morning, we are all done with our drill. Back to normal. The real issues of how they are treated inside the four walls of their homes, how disproportionately they are paid at work, ways in which they are treated at workplace or outside, all things have found their permanent place in women’s day speeches (which I heard one in the afternoon) but come next day, we all cocoon back to being ‘normal’. Domestic violence is commonplace in India. But how many do speak out? Forget about other homes, how many of us speak at our own homes for violence, abuse and misogyny? This numbness is not just confined to men but women as well. Most of them have taken the mis...

Sultan: How 'happy-ending' Salman Khan story becomes tragic when viewed from Anushka Sharma's point-of-view!

Image
Sultan to sum in a single line is a film where underdog wins against all odds. But that's like saying, all superhero films are same where world is at the cusp of extinction and then a superhero arrives to fight all evil forces. Sultan has many side plots apart from the story of its protagonist Sultan Ali Khan (played by Salman Khan). Of the many plots, one that intrigued me was of female protagonist Aarfa (played by Anushka Sharma). Sultan is a breather in otherwise myriad number of Salman Khan movies where female leads are merely used to move their bodies to peppy dance numbers or say that one catchy dialogue (remember 'thappad se dar nahi lagta..' from Dabangg? ) and disappear. Just go away. But Aarfa had her share of the story and screen space which is otherwise rare in Salman's movies. She is not another ordinary village girl who in our films dreams to get married to dashing hero who comes on sports bikes with oiled muscles. In fact she wants them n...
