When I Was Taken To Police Station For Not Wearing Mask While Cycling

Image
Suhail Naqshbandi I don’t know where to begin, how or even if I should begin on this at all, but here I’m. It is 12:24 pm now. The date is 11 November 2020. Only an hour or so ago I left for the market on my sister’s ladybird bicycle to fetch some fish and a packet of curd for mum. On my way, I noticed the cycle’s tires had less air in them so I stopped at the cycle-repair shop on my way and got both tires filled with air. Paid him and left for the market. On the way I thought I should get the curd first and then fetch fish so I decided to cycle past the fish-market to the curd shop. Between fish market and the shop lies police station and there were two cops opposite to the station with their masks on — I mention this because I have seen them mostly without their masks before — so this needed saying. So I knew that they were on guard for people without masks. And I was one of them. My mask was lying in the cycle basket as is always when I’m cycling. I don’t see any poin...

Go to Puttaparthi and wake up the Satya Sai from his grave Shoot in him as many bullets as the boys he defiled Then, and only then, will I be proud Until then, shut up Shut the fuck up and let the courts do their thing! Written in response to the mob frenzy and support to Telangana Police gunning down four rape accused without realizing the implications and meaning of what extra-judicial encounters as this mean.  Inspired from Raghu Karnad’s post .

How Congress And BJP Annulled High Court Judgment That Aimed To Wipe Their Existence — The Story They Want To Bury

Image
Let me tell you an important story which for all reasons will be retold for years to come as our democracy transforms in coming decades. Way back in March 2014, 10 days before the general elections, the Delhi High Court found both BJP and Indian National Congress guilty of accepting foreign funds . The court ruled that these parties were violating the FCRA and were slated to be disqualified because both of them had taken donations from Vedanta and its subsidiaries — which are foreign entities — between 2004 and 2012.  — via Newslaundry.com I know how you are feeling. This was just before the biggest elections that voted in Narendra Modi as Prime Minister of the Republic of India. Imagine those elections without BJP and Congress; just imagine.  If this is indeed true (which it is), how come both parties fought the elections? That’s the interesting bit to know how political parties fight their battles and unite with ‘rivals’ when need be but we will come ...

JNU Crackdown and Sedition: I'm worried over what is happening in India, are you?

Image
Can I ask you something? Will you listen to me without any prejudice or malice or a quick label for me? Will you? I'm feared where we are heading. Are you? Just tell me what sort of protests are allowed? What pranks are allowed? Can I make fun of the ruling class? I ask this for I'm feared and worried. If a student leader in JNU can be arrested, I too can and you too. Everyone one of us is potentially at risk. Do you realize this? Do you realize where we are heading? Do you know what differentiates a India from Pakistan or Arab countries? Is whats happening today point to that difference or are we becoming one of them? Everyday someone or the other comes with, if you had done/said it there, they would have done like that! Now, have we scooped such low to compare ourselves with them? Are they our yardsticks now? I'm worried. I'm worried for you and me. I'm worried for this nation of ours! Leave everything aside, think. Think what is going wrong. JNU has always b...

When a 90% disabled Saibaba is denied bail and Arundhati Roy who questioned charged with Contempt of Court, you are failing the largest democracy

The President of India, Pranab Mukherjee, presents Saibaba with his doctoral degree at the 90th convocation of Delhi University on March 19, 2013 . Do you remember Ajmal Kasab? May be you remember or maybe you don’t. In any case he was the lone surviving 26/11 Mumbai attacks terrorist who was executed in November of 2012. There’s an infamous ‘anda’ isolation cell in Nagpur prison where this Kasab was lodged before execution. It’s an extremely isolated place which in winter becomes unbearably cold making life extremely miserable to live but given how brutally the 19 year old had assassinated people in Mumbai it begs for no sympathy for such a murderer. Point taken. Enter Professor G N Saibaba of Delhi University. In that same infamous ‘anda’ cell of Nagpur is now this professor, a man with 90 per cent disability. Don’t even try to imagine how he spends his life in that isolated cell with denied access to any help or medicines. Sometimes he is given the medicine but not...

Law is a dick: Curious case of a driverless car from India long before Google that killed a man in 2002!

Image
It was year 2002 and that was a fateful night, for the poor homeless chaps sleeping on pavements and also to a superstar who was about to drove his SUV over them. That SUV whose driver has changed in police records from drunken Salman Khan to not-drunken Salman Khan to no Salman Khan now. But the poor who died and four others who were injured have remained same, until now. A lower court pronounced the Khan guilty while High Court with same pieces of evidence lower court referred to has acquitted him of all eight charges. So to say evidence decides the justice will be a grave mistake. Court said, he can’t be convicted on the basis of circumstantial evidence yet the same courts have ran whole trial and subsequent judgement based on the same circumstantial evidence in Aarushi Talwar and Hemraj’s double murder. Court observed how public opinion can’t be a case for court verdicts yet in the case of Aarushi a whole theatric...

Delhi Gang Rape: Is Juvenile Justice Act a law to reform culprits or meek provision to flourish heinous crimes?

Image
The Delhi police on Thursday filed the largest charge sheet of all time in Saket court regarding the brutal gang rape that unfolded in a moving bus of capital. After a week of protests that ran across the states of India cutting every possible divide, police have ensured that every possible section of Indian Penal Code is used to provoke stringent 'possible' punishment for beasts that shocked the conscience of humanity across the globe.   The accused have been charged under sections 302 (murder), 376 (gangrape), 377 (unnatural offence), 201 (destruction of evidence), 307 (attempt to murder), 365 (kidnapping or abduction with intent to secretly or wrongfully confine a person), 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery), 396 (dacoity with murder) and 34 (common intention). The Delhi Brave Heart named 'Nirbhaya' by a leading national daily for the courage and confidence she showed for almost 13 days has breathed her last at Mt. Elizabeth Ho...
